LEGISLATIVE

Legislative assistant

Who can be an LA: Anyone, though typically Freshman

Legislative Assistants is a beginner legislative role that largely mirrors the jobs of staff members for actual Representatives and Senators, and also provides new members a chance to bolster their research and speaking skills. LA's are given the chance to help legislators in researching and writing their bill. They also participate in the State Issues Forum in which LAs craft a proposal based on current issues and debate ideas with others. Furthermore, they are given the chance to help ensure the passage of bills by being a Bill Flow Clerk and even can serve as a personal assistant to the Youth Governor.

Lobbyist

Who can be a Lobbyist: Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors

A lobbyist's job is to advocate on behalf of an organization. Lobbyists spend the first half of the year considering different groups that they would be interested in lobbying for. Then, they get to choose a bill from their delegation that they want to lobby for, and/or have a chance to create their own 'Special Committee Bill'. Lobbyists operate under a points system in which the top three finishers on the state level receive a most Effective Lobbyist Award. Points are earned by Special Committee Bills, Oral Testimonies, Written Testimonies, Lobbyist Activity Slips, and more.

Legislator

Who can be a Legislator: Juniors & Seniors

Legislators spend the year working on a bill with their bill group. A bill group can consist of up to 2 to 4 members and works to produce a bill brief and a bill. A bill brief is a document detailing the statistics, sources, and evidence that support the group's bill. Meanwhile, the bill itself is a 1-2 page document that seeks to add to, amend, or replace a current Illinois law. At Springfield, delegates will try to convince both legislative chambers to pass their bills. After a bill passes both chambers it can be vetoed or signed into law by the Youth Governor.

Being a part of the legislative program has helped me develop a better understanding of our political system. By actively discussing and writing bills, I have transformed into a more confident and informed citizen.

Mansi Gupta - NV VP of Legislators

The legislative part of YAG taught me about the ins and outs of how to successfully write and pass a bill, as well as the procedures of the House of Representatives and Senate. It also taught me to not underestimate the power of my voice, and to talk about issues that I deeply care about.
